It was the heat of the day, a Samaritan woman, parched with thirst, traveled to Jacobs well for water. Drawing water, she is taken by surprise as Jesus, (whom she did not yet know of) a Jew, asks her for a cup of water. "Give me a drink" (John 4:7). Astonished, the Samaritan woman responded to Jesus, “How can a Jewish man like you ask a Samaritan woman like me for a drink of water?” (John 4:9). For Jews had no dealings with Samaritans. Jesus began to minister to the Samaritan and tell her all about the true living water that he possessed, which was in fact, the very thing that her soul was desiring and longing for. "Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again. The water that I will give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life." (John 4: 13-14) Jesus then tells her to send for her husband. But she couldn't. She had had five husbands and the man that she now had, wasn't hers. (John 4:16-18). I can only imagine the weight that this woman was carrying from being either widowed and or divorced five different times.
Pricked at the heart and moved by the knowledge that Jesus spoke, the Samaritan proclaimed Jesus must was a prophet. Even better. He was the Christ, sent to save the world. With the help from Jesus, the Samaritan woman came into the realization that her soul was longing for contentment and satisfaction that Jesus was more than able to quench. Excited that she no longer had to look for a husband to fill her voids, she sought out to town, to tell everyone about the Jew that she had met at Jacobs well, the Messiah, Jesus, the True Living Water.
If we settle for worldly water, we will always be parched. True satisfaction is found in Christ and Christ alone. Only God can supply the true water of life and supply our every need. At some point of time, we looked for things and people to make us happy. As children, we just knew that candy was going to make us giddy, until it was all gone, then we looked for more. As teenagers, the latest shoes and cell phones made us feel included, until the latest surfaced, then off we went to proclaim that as well. Now, as adults, it's our career status, the polished spouse, and the luxurious vacations that make us feel accomplished, "arrived" and apart of. With time, the career becomes daunting and the once beloved spouse isn't so cherishable anymore.
Did you know that true joy and true peace is found in Jesus? We were made to crave and long for the filling of him. Can I encourage your source a little? Jesus is the source of it all. Craving more goodness? Find goodness in God. Seeking genuine love? You can also find that love in God. We are forever looking for more. We're always eating, yet always starving. Always drinking, yet we have a never ending thirst. When we are most satisfied in Jesus, he is glorified. Let's set our void hearts on the one that came to give us life and life more abundantly. Knowing that as we drank daily from the cup of Jesus, our hearts will flow rivers of living water. (John 7:38)
Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst.” (John 6:35)
The afflicted shall eat and be satisfied; those who seek him shall praise the Lord! May your hearts live forever! (Psalm 22:26)
In your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore. (Psalm 16:11)
Jesus Is Just That Good,
